Rain, Bonne Bay Marine Station, Rocky Harbour and Laundry

Today turned out to be just what we needed. The weather was lousy this morning and this cottage/house has a laundry room. The rain and the laundry room has given us a chance to get back to square one in terms of clothing. After a week or so on the road things were getting tight. We should have known something was up when restaurants were insisting we sit on the porch or do take-out! HA! I’m kidding. It was only me that most establishments insisted sit outside.

We spent the day in Norris Point and Rocky Harbour. We visited the Bonne Bay Marine Station which is part of Memorial University. They had a great exhibit on many species. Surrounded by Gros Morne National Park, the Bonne Bay area exhibits unparalleled diversity of habitat, marine plants, fish and invertebrates. This diversity cannot be matched anywhere else in north-eastern North America. There was some hands on in the lab and touch tanks.

It was then onto the Long Point lighthouse for a hike up to another spectacular view. The lighthouse was built in 1876 and usually provides a great vantage point for whale watching and icebergs. No icebergs and no whales. Speaking of sightings, the only moose we have seen so far on this trip is the one on my bun the other night. Everyone told us to watch out for the moose as they were ‘all over the place’!

Tomorrow we have booked the Western Brook Pond boat tour. We will all be wearing clean undies and keeping our fingers crossed for no rain, good visibility and a moose sighting – preferably on the side and not middle of the road. We will keep you posted.

Hi all! Glad to see and hear that you’re having such a wonderful time and that you now smell better. Perhaps with all the cod around nobody noticed!

I’ve been following along and wishing for a vacation of my own.

    Safe travels,

    Aunt Lorrie
